Chick-fil-A and The Fight For Traditional Biblical Marriage
“We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.” “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”
Chick-fil-A appreciation day
Tim: "There were maybe 90 guests in front of us. It took us an hour to get our meal, but it was worth the wait." Carmel, Indiana
Michelle: "This is the Chick Fil-A in Akron OH on Howe Ave. 40 min wait in line, jam packed inside & the drive through line goes out into the strip mall parking lot. Marriage traditionalists have spoken!!"

**Lead letter: Christians are mobilizing with joy：有很多基督徒參與這福來雞欣賞日後，深受激勵。 America is not dead! There are those that have given up on America. As they see it, there is no hope for our nation. Greed and sin have consumed her. It was about 11:15, and people were already lined up at the door. Never was I so happy to stand in such a long line to place my order. I was elated! The longer the line the more elated I was! Others standing in line also had big smiles on their faces. They were speaking with one another, and I witnessed something that had been lacking — a real community spirit. People were coming together. They were young and old, standing together to make a difference. There was a cause that banded us together. We stood together for the sacredness of marriage and the preservation of our nation. In essence we had one supreme desire, to bring Jesus Christ back into the public square! Oh how refreshing this was! We were indeed neighbors with a common interest, desire and purpose! I also watched the young people at work serving the customers. They worked hard and had big smiles on their faces. Furthermore, they were courteous and full of joy! No doubt they were tired but they too were in sympathy with the cause. Here for the first time in a very long time I witnessed the Christian work ethic that made America great.
員工和顧客的分享（有Video視頻）Residents line up to support Chick-Fil-A restaurants：客人說：基督徒一開口，就會面對攻擊。 Robert said Chick-fil-A was under attack because of Cathy’s statements supporting traditional marriage. “A Christian can’t open his mouth without being attacked,” he said. “I’ve had it. It’s ridiculous.” “We’ve been ready and it’s been huge,” Holmes said. “I tell our employees from day one, it’s been our goal to treat every customer with honor, dignity and respect. We are a company that operates on Christian principles and I personally am a Christian man. We’re going to continue to treat every customer who comes through our doors with honor, dignity and respect.” All available workers had been called in to work at the Clemson Boulevard, Anderson Mall and S.C. 81 stores operated by Holmes. His wife, sister-in-law, five-year-old granddaughter and all of his marketing and advertisement staff had dropped their daily routines to sling chicken sandwiches, refill drinks and clean tables. Holmes was in Mexico City teaching Christian business and life principles he learned from Chick-fil-A when Cathy’s comments led to the controversy. Holmes came back to Anderson late Sunday night. “It’s very rewarding,” he said during a brief break. “It’s encouraging to us that a lot of folks like Chick-fil-A in general.”

Chick-fil-A Has 'Record-Setting' Sales on Appreciation Day: With no Chick-fil-A locations in Maine, Auburn, Maine resident Arthur Langley organized a caravan to cart supporters to the nearest location two hours away. Langley said he and 14 friends and supporters drove the two hours and "happily" waited a "very very long time" to "demonstrate their support for what they believe was very important values in our society."
Chick-fil-A fans flock to Dallas restaurants to support chain’s stance against gay marriage: Fellow minister Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Dallas threw his support behind the movement this week, calling on his followers to join him in eating at the restaurant today. Dallas Pastors Speak Out About Chick-Fil-A Controversy Video: "This is not about bashing gays. That is not what this is about. This is about Americans and Christians standing up and saying 'enough is enough,'" said Jeffress, during his sermon Sunday.
“We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit,” Cathy said. “We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.” Asked about the company’s support of the traditional family, Cathy said in the Biblical Recorder story, “Well, guilty as charged.” “我們打算保持這一立場，”他說，“我們知道，可能這並不受到每個人的歡迎，但感謝神，我們生活在一個能講出我們的價值觀並遵從聖經原則的國家中。”
Dan Cathy
A husband. I have been married to my wife, Rhonda, for almost 40 years.
A musician. I play the trumpet and almost became a professional musician before joining Chick-fil-A full-time.
A Sunday school teacher. I love to teach the application of scripture in real life situations to juniors and seniors in high school at New Hope Baptist Church.
THOUGHTS FROM DAN: The local church is one of the most significant and important institutions on the planet. I think that if we want to maximize our effectiveness and take full advantage of leadership opportunities, we should be invested and involved in the local church. Church is not a sanctuary for saints; it's a hospital for sinners... like me. New Hope Baptist Church has been my church home and "hospital" for more than 15 years. This is the place - more than any other - that feeds me and prepares me to be more effective in my leadership of others. Over the years, I have enjoyed many responsibilities at New Hope, but perhaps the biggest and most fulfilling has been the opportunity I have to teach Sunday School to high school juniors and seniors. What a joy to be able to share and learn with those young men.
Chick-fil-A controversy shines light on company’s charitable giving：For evangelical Christians, such programs make Chick-fil-A a model corporate citizen.“On the conservative end of the Christian world, they are seen as being one of the most fabulous examples of Christianity lived out in appropriate ways,” Leonard said. “They support all kinds of wonderful things.”
When questioned about Chick-Fil-A's "Closed on Sunday" policy Cathy responded, "It was not an issue in 1946 when we opened up our first restaurant. But as living standards changed and lifestyles changed, people came to be more active on Sundays." The policy has not changed over the years as malls began changing their policies by opening on Sundays. "We've always put in our lease that we will be closed on Sundays," Cathy said. "We've had a track record that we were generating more business in six days than the other tenants were generating in seven [days]."
Vows To Block Chick-Fil-A From Opening Restaurant：he doesn't want a business in the city "that discriminates against a population." "You called supporters of gay marriage 'prideful.' Here in Boston, to borrow your own words, we are 'guilty as charged.' We are indeed full of pride for our support of same-sex marriage and our work to expand freedom to all people. We are proud that our state and our city have led the way for the country on equal marriage rights... There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it."
芝加哥市長：“Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a statement to the Chicago Tribune. “They disrespect our fellow neighbors and residents.” Emanuel was vowing his support for Alderman Proco Moreno’s announcement that he would block construction of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his district. “If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the First Ward,” he told the newspaper. 【On Sunday, Chicago Cardinal Francis George issued a rebuttal on the Archdiocese of Chicago's blog. “Recent comments by those who administer our city seem to assume that the city government can decide for everyone what are the 'values' that must be held by citizens of Chicago,” George wrote. “I was born and raised here, and my understanding of being a Chicagoan never included submitting my value system to the government for approval. Must those whose personal values do not conform to those of the government of the day move from the city?”】【天主教芝加哥大主教反對市長的說法： Reflections on “Chicago values” The Church, because Jesus raised the marital union to the level of symbolizing his own union with his Body the Church, has an interest in determining which marital unions are sacramental and which are not. The Church sees married life as a path to sanctity and as the means for raising children in the faith, as citizens of the universal kingdom of God. These are all legitimate interests of both Church and state, but they assume and do not create the nature of marriage.】
San Francisco is the third city to tell Chick-fil-A: Keep out：Edwin M. Lee, mayor of the progressive city, tweeted Thursday night: "Very disappointed #ChickFilA doesn't share San Francisco's values & strong commitment to equality for everyone." He also added a warning to his subsequent tweet: "Closest #ChickFilA to San Francisco is 40 miles away & I strongly recommend that they not try to come any closer."
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa sent out a statement late in the day about the Chick-fil-A kerfuffle, which began when Cathy spoke out publicly in support of the “biblical definition of the family unit.”“Los Angeles has one of the most vibrant LGBT communities in this country,” Villaraigosa said. “I'm proud to support them as we call on Chick-fil-A's leadership to reconsider their position and join the growing majority of Americans who support marriage equality. In Los Angeles and in America, love and liberty will always triumph."
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is among the country’s most high-profile advocates for gay marriage, even officiating a few himself. But now he’s also become one of the most stalwart supporters of Chick-fil-A. On Friday, he again said that trying to push out the chain “isn’t the right thing to do and it isn’t what America stands for.”
Chick-fil-A controversy reveals hypocrisy："If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult," Democratic Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston roared last month. Washington Mayor Vincent Gray called Chick-fil-A "hate chicken" and opposes its expansion in America’s capital. Such coercion should terrify every American. This easily could become a two-way street. Starbucks supports gay marriage. Could a pro-Chick-fil-A backlash prompt a Bible Belt mayor to block Starbucks from his city?
Chick-fil-A appreciation day
Truett Cathy）帶領的凱西家庭，是一個極好的基督徒家庭，他們決心以聖經原則經營這個公司，他們的故事也是真正的美國人成功的故事，”(“The Cathy family, let by Chick Fil-A founder Truett Cathy, are a wonderful Christian family who are committed to operating the company with Biblical principles and whose story is the true American success story. … The Chick-Fil-A company refuses to open on Sundays so that their employees can go to church if they wish. Despite the pressure from malls, airports, and the business world to open on Sundays, they still don’t. They treat customers and employees with respect and dignity.”)
Chick-fil-A and Chicago: A heads-up for the Church：Just like the early Christians who were accused by pagans hating the human race simply because they were unwilling to accept their unlimited number of gods, Christians in the twenty-first century will likewise be accused of hatred. In fact, they already are. Archbishop Tartaglia said, “I am deeply concerned that today, defending the traditional meaning of marriage is almost considered ‘hate speech’ and branded intolerant. Such a response is undemocratic, closes debate and is highly manipulative.”
How do you know this is a Conservative gathering and not an Occupy Chick-Fil-A protest? Note the orderly lines, lack of anybody being raped, no cars being defecated on, no vandalism…
O’Reilly: Chick-fil-A Support Big Win for Traditional Force：“Countless thousands of Americans swarmed Chick-fil-A eateries everywhere Wednesday — standing tall for the First Amendment and sending a particularly pointed message to intolerant politicians like City Council Speaker Christine Quinn,” the Post editorial said, referring to the Mayoral candidate and outspoken supporter of gay rights. “That message: We’re sick and tired of being bullied — forced to adopt speech codes and politically correct policies and practices insisted upon by activist elites and lefty pols,” the Post wrote. “Galvanized by social media (which the Left once thought it owned),” the editorial said, “they lined up for blocks all across the country to buy sandwiches at Chick-fil-A restaurants, intending to make their point quietly, politely — while taking care to bag their trash as they left. (Unlike some protestors we could name.)”

Across U.S., Fans Throng Chick-fil-A Restaurants to Show Support for Christian Values：While company officials have not said how many individuals made it a point to dine at one of their restaurants on the appreciation day, by the morning of the national event over 650,000 people had signed up on the special Facebook page Huckabee had created for individuals to show their appreciation and say they would participate. At many of Chick-fil-A’s more than 1,600 locations across the country, customers waited patiently in long lines for more than an hour to be served — even though “they could have driven down the road to McDonald’s and been in and out in five minutes,” reported Baptist Press News of a Chick-fil-A location in Rock Hill, South Carolina. “I applaud this man’s courage to stand up for his convictions by speaking up for Christ’s teachings,” Baptist Press quoted another supporter as writing on Facebook about Cathy. “More people need to be so bold.” Another Chick-fil-A fan wrote to note that “a godly man like Mr. Cathy has awoken the Christians to make a stand. We have been silent too long. God will bless his company.”
Fans of Chick-fil-A and 'Christian values' take a stand in Abingdon：Members of a number of area churches said the controversy inspired them to make their voices heard as Christians. Aberdeen's Marva Choates and Linda Fagnas said the pastor of Zion Temple Church in Havre de Grace gave out fliers urging congregants to attend the Appreciation Day. "It's time for Christians to stand up and take a stand for what we believe in," Choates said. "We need to let others know that the Bible is right." She said she fully supports Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy. "He is not ashamed to let others know where he stands," Choates said. Fagnas added: "They have Christian values and we support that." Einhorn said a number of his fellow members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Joppa were also buying food. One of them, Helen Ryan of Abingdon, said she came because "this is America" and freedom of speech should be supported. Looking at the line, she said: "Looks like the silent Christians came out." "It's great that everybody came out," he said, "You can't even get in. It's crazy. I have never seen this before."
Christians show support for traditional marriage at Waterford Chick-Fil-A：The public debate became particularly heated when former right-hand man to President Obama and current Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emmanuel, said that there would be no more Chick-Fil-A franchises opening in Chicago, because they don't reflect "Chicago values". (This view of Chicago values drew harsh criticism from the Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Francis George.) Everyday, ordinary Christians tend to be long-fused, patient people, by doctrine as well as in practice. This is why the phrase "the silent majority" was coined in the 80s to describe them. Sometimes, though, the silent majority becomes vocal when they feel their country's founding values are being threatened. Fred (from the Ford pick-up truck) said, "I'd wait 3 hours for that man today. I'm a born-again, saved-by-the-Blood Christian. We're a Christian nation, and nobody's gonna tell me how I believe, what I believe, and what to do."
Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day: Faithful Go on Meal-Buying Frenzy：The Maganas, who drove from neighboring Riverside County to Orange County in order to be supportive of friends they grew up with, also saw that the line of people to enter the restaurant wrapped alongside the building and out to the parking area. "When my wife and I came here we wanted to cry. My wife was crying. We see that we are not alone. Really it's glory to God. It's for Him. We are showing our support for our Christian fellowship, our friends out here, that they are not alone," said Magana as he already had been standing in line for 20 minutes with about 30 people in front of him. "Our family of 10 who were coming back home from vacation found one in Wentzville, MO to eat at. We started yelling with excitement when we saw the enormous outpouring of support. The walls were elbow to elbow in the restaurant. I'm glad to support them," Dawn wrote.
Chris McDaniel: America Still a Christian Nation: But the lack of an established religion does not mean that Christians should be declared irrelevant. It is the responsibility of good people to exert cultural influence by speaking their minds and spending their money. Fed up with being bullied, people of faith finally sent a powerful political message -- one chicken sandwich at a time.
On Chick-fil-A, all sides agree: Don't bully chain's employees：A Tucson man who taped himself proudly bullying a Chick-fil-A employee and then posted the encounter online has been fired by his employer in what might be called a delicious act of deep-fried comeuppance. The rest of the world seems to disagree. The video was posted online, where it quickly went viral. Outraged viewers pounced on Smith's behavior, calling him a bully, with some describing the encounter as an ambush. While you watch the video, note how calm, cool, collected and polite the employee remains.
Murrieta Chick-fil-A draws support at festive rally: The mood in Murrieta was festive, with a small group of musicians playing Christian music for a large crowd that had gathered around to sing along. “Any sanction of free speech is an affront (to) Christianity,” said Murrieta resident Allan Bailey, adding he was there to support the First Amendment and free speech rights. Bailey said he had been in line over an hour and a half, and that the line had more than doubled in length since he had arrived. He estimated the wait had reached over three hours long at one point. “It’s worth it,” said Hemet resident J. Baker, when informed that the line was several hours long. “We’ll wait all night.” Baker said she and her family drove down from Hemet to support Chick-Fil-A today. “I think we’ve been silent and tolerant for too long. People that want tolerance seem to be intolerant of everyone else’s thoughts and beliefs,” Baker added.

Why This Is The Best Time to Be A Christian Business Owner: Not only for standing up for uncompromising values, but being an example to the rest of us! And showing that in the end right does win! It has emboldened other people, like charming Carole Lokan-Moore who showed her appreciation for Chick Fil-A in another way…with a very unique sign:
Another Kind of Christian Witness at Chick-fil-A: A native of Eritrea, Jirom moved to the United States in 2008 to be with his fiancée, whose family had left the isolated African country several years prior. Like most of the 60,000 refugees who arrived in the U.S. that year, he had little money and few relationships to land on his feet. But a Christian couple, inspired by their church's sponsorship of a large Burmese family, decided to open their doors. The fast food restaurant of a thousand lands is the work of Erik Devriendt, the owner/operator of this Chick-fil-A since June 2011. Devriendt first learned about the plight of refugees through the Richmond Christian Leadership Institute, a year-long leadership program that trains Christians to understand the history and cultural dynamics of their city. "When Erik first opened the Chick-fil-A, people told him that his idealistic plan to employ refugees would never work," says Erik Bonkovsky, lead pastor at City Church of Richmond. "But months later, he's proving skeptics wrong. Erik has been a committed and steadfast advocate for refugee employment in Richmond. For every refugee he employs, an at-risk family is stabilized." Devriendt says he's getting more than he's giving. "We've been blown away by how [hiring refugees] has challenged our team and ultimately blessed our business," he says. "I think that's the only way we can make this city flourish—by actively loving rather than just agreeing that it would be a good thing if someone else did something." He's more excited about a friendship budding between Jirom, a Christian, and a Bhutanese employee, a Hindu. "They work shoulder to shoulder four days a week, and I've overheard them lately discussing matters of faith," says Devriendt. "While evangelism isn't a stated goal of ours, it has been neat to see the way God weaves himself into our business to enable conversations about faith."
Chick fil A Appreciation Day Church Reaction: "Our entire church heard about the entire Chick-fil-A situation and so the entire church came out and ate today," Montgomery resident Candice Nelson said. "We support Chick-fil-A and we believe in what the Bible says and we stand on it," Abraham Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Fredrick Harris said. Pastor Harris says supporters have demonstrated they stand behind a private company's right to stand up for its beliefs, even if that comes with criticism. "Whether we are on our jobs or in our homes, we are the church and we should take a stand for Christ wherever we are at. We are going to suffer as Christ suffers and when you stand for the truth you are going to suffer," Pastor Harris said.
