梅爾一家本來是屬於明尼亞波利斯第一浸信會(the First Baptist Church of Minneapolis)。

(Fellowship of the Burning Heart)。

Henrietta Mears: My Own Ten Commandments as a Sunday School Teacher

When I was just a girl in college, the Lord entrusted me with a large Sunday school class. Many times I faced what I must do as a teacher to please the Lord, but somehow I just did not carry it out. One night I awoke from a restless sleep and determined never to fail the Lord again. So I got up and wrote down what I still call "My Own Ten Commandments." I decided to say what I would do, not just what I ought to do. There have been times when it was agony to carry these out, but by God's grace they have been the pattern for my teaching. God has honored it.

1.         I will win the personal allegiance of every student in my Sunday School class to the Lord and Master by talking, writing, and prayer.

2.         I will not think my work over when my pupil has made his decision for Christ.

3.         I will see that he finds a definite place in some specific task.

4.         I will bring Christianity out of the unreal into everyday life.

5.         I will seek to help each one discover the will of God, because the Master can use every talent.

6.         I will instill a divine discontent into the mind of everyone who can do more than he is doing.

7.         I will make it easy for anyone to come to me with the deepest experiences of his inner life.

8.         I will keep the cross of Christ central in the Christian life.

9.         I will pray as I have never prayed before for wisdom and power.

10.    I will spend and be spent in this battle.

Her home life provided a rich spiritual atmosphere, each day beginning with Bible reading, family prayer, and hymn singing. Since her other siblings were much older, she became the special focus of her mother's attention, providing the young girl a strong foundation in the Christian faith. On Easter Sunday morning as a seven year old, she declared her desire to become a Christian and to join the church. Though young, it was clear that she was informed and serious about her faith and was baptized soon after. Her family belonged to the First Baptist Church of Minneapolis, and they would often entertain such renowned Christian leaders as W. Graham Scroggie, G. Campbell Morgan, and R. A. Torrey, who greatly influenced the young girl. Her pastor, W.B. Riley, was a leader in the Fundamentalist Movement, and his Dispensational understanding of theology and belief in the inerrancy of Scripture are consistent with Henrietta's later teaching and writing. .. Her Fidelis Class, comprised of young women at the First Baptist Church, grew to an enrollment of three thousand attendees at the end of ten years. Such growth was based on a system of small groups comprised of five girls including a leader; when groups reached ten girls, one girl left to start a new group of her own. She also started the highly successful Dorcas Group, designed for young married women. …In March of 1926, she met Dr. Stewart P. MacLennan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, California,… she finally sensed God's call and accepted the position of Director of Christian Education in the fall of 1928. She held this position for thirty-five years, and it served as the platform from which a multitude of people believed in Christ, learned the Scripture, were trained in leadership, and founded a plethora of ministries. …Under her direction, the Sunday School grew from 450 to more than 6000 in 1933, and later to 6500-the largest Presbyterian Sunday school of its time in the world. "Teacher," as her students called her, built the church education program on a strong foundation of prayer, hard work, a high degree of organization, and a commitment to Christ-honoring excellence. Among the goals that she achieved for the program were to have a department for every age grouping and a separate class for every age, to maintain a complete curriculum at all levels, and to develop teachers of the quality found in public schools of the time. The teacher-training program was a key ingredient to the success of the church school. She viewed thorough preparation and planning as a key ingredient to teaching or any other enterprise. Prayer and hard work was the means to such excellence. While the clear message of the Gospel was to remain the same, teaching methods might vary widely, and she used the newest technology or educational psychology at her disposal…Consistent with her call to strategic service, Mears chose to teach the College Department with the avowed aim of winning young men and women to Christ and developing leadership for the church worldwide. Practicing a one-on-one evangelistic approach as her mother had done, she personally led thousands of individuals, many of them young people, to saving faith in Christ. She modeled the disciplined effort that she called for from her college students. It is said that in the beginning of this teaching ministry, she spent twenty hours per week in lesson preparation for thirty minutes of teaching. The college group grew to well over six hundred; its success was attributed to solid biblical teaching, faithful prayer, and the relevance of the message to their life needs and problems, all in an enthusiastic and caring environment. Over the course of her ministry, from this college group emerged over four hundred church and ministry leaders. …Mears and three colleagues founded Gospel Light Press-later Gospel Light Publications-in 1933 in an attempt to meet this demand and sales soared.

While Christian Education Director at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, she built one of the largest Sunday Schools in the world and wrote curriculum that was in such high demand that to publish it she founded Gospel Light in 1933.” http://www.gospellight.com/info.html.

[3] “At last the Holy Spirit freed me to say it. ‘Father, I am going to accept this as Thy Word—by faith! I’m going to allow faith to go beyond my intellectual questions and doubts, and I will believe this to be Your inspired Word.’ When I got up from my knees at Forest Home that August night, my eyes stung with tears. I sensed the presence and power of God as I had not sensed in months. Not all my questions were answered, but a major bridge had been crossed. In my heart and mind, I knew a spiritual battle in my soul had been fought and won.” Billy Graham, Just as I Am: The Autobiography of Billy Graham (San Francisco: HarperSanFrancisco and Zondervan, 1997), 139. At the end of that August, Graham went to Forest Home to join the annual College Briefing Conference to be one of the speakers. “During the week, I had times of prayer and private discussion with Miss Mears at her cottage. Rarely had I witnessed such Christian love and compassion as she had for those students. She had faith in the integrity of the Scriptures, and an understanding of Bible truth as well as modern scholarship. I was desperate for every insight she could give me.

By contrast, Chuck Templeton had a passion for intellectualism that had been stimulated by his studies. He made no attempt to hide his feelings about me. ‘Billy, you’re fifty years out of date. People no longer accept the Bible as being inspired the way you do. Your faith is too simple. Your language is out of date. You’re going to have to learn the new jargon if you’re going to be successful in your ministry.’ . . . . . .

I ached as if I were on the rack, with Miss Mears stretching me one way and Church Templeton stretching me the other.” Ibid., 138. Another important comment Graham made about Mears is this: “Henrietta Mears, the great Christian educator and Bible teacher who had been so instrumental in my spiritual growth in Los Angeles, also came to see what God was doing in London.” Ibid., 231.

[5] “I have known Dr. Henrietta Mears for approximately fifteen years. She has had remarkable influence, both directly and indirectly, on my life. In fact, I doubt if any other woman outside of my wife and mother has had such a marked influence. Her gracious spirit, her devotional life, her steadfastness for the simple gospel, and her knowledge of the Bible have been a continual inspiration and amazement to me. She is certainly one of the greatest Christians I have ever known!” Billy Graham, “Introduction,” in B. H. Powers, The Henrietta Mears Story (Westwood, N.J.: Fleming H. [7]韋斯敏德神學院約翰.

May 1, 1541, the City Council rescinded the ban on Calvin and even held him up as a man of God. This was an agonizing decision for Calvin, because he knew that life in Geneva would be full of controversy and danger. Earlier in October he said to Farel that though he preferred not to go, "yet because I know that I am not my own master, I offer my heart as a true sacrifice to the Lord" (see note 25). This became Calvin's motto and the picture on his emblem included a hand holding out a heart to God with the inscription, prompte et sincere ("promptly and sincerely").” http://www.desiringgod.org/library/biographies/97calvin.html.
